The booth to our right was digital photographer Betsy Clement and to our left, artist Martha Bennington of http://www.the3sisters.com/ (recycle/reuse/reclaim/reinvent) who makes items (purses/jewelry) from old LPs, marbles, bottlecaps, dominos and more.

The power of the media

I was surprised when I found out my "Clown Fish" painting had made it into the St. Pete Times Weekend section as part of the article on the Cool Art Show. Then I was thrilled when I found out it has also made it into the Friday tbt Weekend edition as well. It wasn't until I was at the show today that I found out the image of the "Clown Fish" had also been shown on the front cover of the Tampa Tribune's weekend edition on Friday. I lost count of the number of people that came to my booth (#21) that said they'd seen that painting in the paper.

The Cool Art Show had a very good turnout day 1. The show continues tomorrow, Sunday 7/18, from 10am-5pm. If you didn't get a chance to come by today, stop by tomorrow. 75 very talented artists.

Some pictures of the booth from today and the Times Weekender attached. Thanks again to all that came out today!

Here are a few of the new oil paintings I'm working on to exhibit for the first time at the Cool Art Show next weekend at the St. Petersburg Coliseum, July 17 &18, 10-5. I'll be at booth #21. Stop by if you can!

A few photos from the Hyde Park Art Fair, 4/10/10

After my wife stopped by the Art Fair on Saturday, I'm glad I didn't sign up to exhibit at this event. A lot of the same vendors and not a lot of buying customers. I stand by my decision to wait for the Cool Art Show and then do more select shows in the fall.
Here are a few pictures taken towards the end of the afternoon.

This weekend is the Hyde Park art fair (Tampa)

I'm not exhibiting at this show but I plan to stop by and see fellow artist John Shevlin, Jr. For information on this show, click here. Next weekend is the 35th annual Mainsail Art Festival in St. Petersburg.

Update from the Art on Park art festival this weekend

This past weekend we traveled to Lake Park, FL - near WPB and Riviera Beach, FL - for the 1st annual "Art on Park" art festival. I give the town of Lake Park credit for pulling together their first art festival, but as a vendor, this show wasn't what we'd hoped for. Pictures from the show on my facebook page (click here). Set up was pretty easy since we knew our booth # ahead of time - and there were only 31 vendors so there was no trouble finding the booth or getting the truck close enough to unload (for a change!). But we were very spread out - too much space between vendors. We'd also assumed that the show would have pulled in crowds from neighboring West Palm and Singer Island but that was not the case. We only met one of the jurors and there was to have been five total, including Burt Reynolds as the honorary jury chair. Understandably, he was not present due to recent health issues. We weren't even told when the juror made their decision and to which artist the best of show award went to.

Day two was even worse because of the weather. At least four vendors that we know of didn't bother to return. The show was called off about 1:30 due to impending rain. It had already stormed on the west coast of Florida, cancelling the Tarpon Srings, Pass-A-Grille and Lake Wales art festivals. Luckily we pulled out of there before the weather hit and actually made it home at a decent hour.
Ginger kept an ongoing log of would-be "tweets" (she was itching to get online) so watch for a blog of those coming soon.

We met a few vendors that we had not yet seen at other shows this year... Kevin Ritter (St. Petersburg), mixed media/colored pencil was right next to us. Small world!

That's the last show booked so far but we're planning for a few more later this year. Please check back for updates on new work and new show dates.

Art on Park art festival this weekend, Lake Park, FL

If you're anywhere near the West Palm Beach, FL area this weekend, check out the Art on Park art festival. This is the first year for the festival, so let's make it a great one!

For those of you that have been following my blog and / or have come out to see me at the past art festivals this year, I wanted to let you know that I'll have 2 new paintings on display this weekend. One of which the paint is barely dry!

For all you Nemo lovers out there, "Clown Fish # 2" is a 30x40 oil on canvas and "Palm Beach" is a 24x48 oil on canvas. Check out the background of Ginger's Twitter page. Recognize that painting?

Check back for photos following the festival.

Las Olas (Ft. Lauderdale) Art Fair, part II - photos

The Las Olas Art Fair (part II) was this past weekend in Ft. Lauderdale, March 6 & 7. We drove over Friday night, caught about 3 hours of sleep, then headed out just before 5am for setup. We had a booth spot (#73) right across from the lifesize animal sculptures which drew a lot of attention. Lions, tigers, elephants... even aligators! For this show we changed up the layout of the booth and even added a few framed giclee prints.

More pictures on my Facebook page (click here) and check out the blog site for the Howard Alan Art Festivals for info on this and other shows.

We ran into a few of the vendors we've met at the shows we've done so far in 2010... Herion, Russell Peters, and John Shevlin, Jr.

We were lucky enough to have a booth very close to our hotel, The Riverside Hotel, so that we could run in and take a quick nap after setup. It becomes a very long day when you start @ 5am and have to sit outside till 5pm!

A special thanks to Kerry for driving up from Miami to see us. Sorry we didn't last much past 8pm!

Next show: Art on Park in Lake Park, FL. If you are in the area, stop by!

Pictures from day 2 of the Sarasota Festival of the Arts, Feb 21st

A little late in posting these, but here they are. Day 2 of the 22nd annual Sarasota Festival of the Arts was a beautiful day. The weather was perfect, the sun was out. The crowds came out as well. Everyone brought their dogs out. Made us wish we could have brought Sargent along.

You can view all the photos on my facebook page (click here).

Ran into a few of the vendors we'd met at the past events, including Steven Whorl, a stained glass artist - Classic Glass Studios and Russell Peters, a ceramic artist - Faith Fired Pottery.

Hope to see you at a future art festival. Check back for new show dates or subscribe to the blog and receive instant email updates.
Thanks!

Getting ready for the Las Olas Art Festival (2) March 6 & 7 - Ft. Lauderdale

Next weekend is the Las Olas Art Festival II in Ft. Lauderdale (March 6 & 7) - a Howard Alan event. This will be the furthest we've traveled to date for an art festival so it poses a few additional challenges, including where to fit the luggage? I've also been re-evaluating the tent set up and plan to make a few changes for this next show. Ginger has been busy matting & framing a few of the prints so that we can display those as well. Now we'll have the option of buying the original oil painting, a framed print of three pieces ("Clown Fish", "Blue Rothko", and "Walsingham Park") and unframed prints. Notecards are also being made but I don't think they'll be ready in time for this show.

Looking forward to seeing a few friends at this show including John Shevlin Jr. He will be there with his "Tropical Funk" paintings.

I've been told Las Olas part I was very busy so I'm looking forward to the crowds at this show.

Reliving the "Burn Notice" episode that features my painting, "Red Rothko"

Found a pretty cool blog page tonight where you can watch streaming video. Check out Burn Notice, season 1, episode 8 "Wanted Man." About 6 minutes in, there is a scene in Fi's apartment where she and Michael are sitting on a red couch, under a red painting. That is my "Red Rothko" painting.

Day 1 of the Sarasota Festival of the Arts, Feb. 20

Today was the first day of the Sarasota Festival of the Arts in downtown Sarasota. The weather was perfect. One short rain shower and then the sun came out. Tomorrow will be the final day of the 2-day event. Over 200 vendors from around the country - painting, photography, jewelry, scultpure, clothing, food vendors and more. I've uploaded some photos to my Facebook page (view here).

The show is 9:30am-5pm Sunday 2/21. Thanks again to Allen and Michelle for stopping by!

16th Annual St. Pete Beach Corey Area Art & Craft Festival

Today was the first day of the St. Pete Beach Art & Craft Fair (Corey Avenue). It started out so much better than the Dunedin show- warmer and dry. But, the rain came just after noon and by 4pm the streets were almost empty. Tomorrow is the 2nd and last day of this event, 10am-5pm. View pictures from today on Facebook.

Who says Florida doesn't get cold?

Well, I survived my first outdoor art show [Dunedin Art Show, Jan 9/10]! It was beyond COLD! Day 1 was wet and cold and unfortunately, just not the ideal weather for throngs of art lovers to venture out and spend money. The middle picture is me trying to stay warm. Day 2 was much better - warmer and sunny - but still too cold for Floridians to come outdoors to enjoy an art show.
My next show is this weekend, January 30/31 in St. Pete Beach, Corey area. Weather should be much nicer so come on out and say hello!
To view all the pictures from the Dunedin Art Show Jan 9/10, you can visit Ginger's Facebook pages. Day one.
Hope to see you there!

Next two shows:
Sarasota Festival of the Arts
Saturday & Sunday, Feb 20 & 21
10am-5pm, Sarasota
March 27, 28
10am-5pm
Downtown Lake Park
(honorary jury chair is Burt Reynolds!)

My first art show is this coming weekend, Jan 9/10

Well, here we are just 6 days away from my first art show! I'll be at the Dunedin Art Festival on Saturday & Sunday, January 9 & 10th.

I had prints made of a few new paintings and am getting all my original oil paintings framed and wired for hanging. Very excited and nervous and am just hoping for good weather.

Stop by to see my booth - 99% of the work is completely new from 2009 and not even on my website yet! A few samples posted here.
Would love to see you all come out to see the 50+ artists at the Dunedin Art Festival:
